Global Handwashing Day: Clean Hands, Healthy Lives
14 October, 2025
Every year, Global Handwashing Day is observed on October 15 to spread awareness about the importance of hand hygiene in preventing diseases and promoting public health.
Why Handwashing Matters
Our hands touch countless surfaces throughout the day — from doorknobs to phones — collecting germs that can easily spread infections. Regular handwashing with soap and water can:
- Prevent common illnesses such as cold, flu, and diarrheal diseases
- Reduce hospital-acquired infections
- Protect vulnerable individuals such as children, the elderly, and patients with chronic conditions
- Improve community health and hygiene
According to the
World Health Organization (WHO), proper hand hygiene can reduce respiratory infections by up to 20% and diarrheal diseases by up to 40%. A simple habit truly has the power to save lives.
When Should You Wash Your Hands?
Practicing hand hygiene at key moments can significantly lower the risk of infection. Remember to wash your hands:
- Before and after eating or handling food
- After using the toilet
- After coughing, sneezing or touching your face
- After touching commonly used surfaces
- Before and after caring for someone who is ill or injured
How to Wash Your Hands Properly
Follow these five simple steps recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):
- Wet your hands with clean, running water.
- Lather with soap, covering the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
- Scrub for at least 20 seconds.
- Rinse thoroughly under clean water.
- Dry with a clean towel or allow to air dry.
